Hereditary hair loss - Androgenetic alopecia
The causes of hereditary hair loss are known to a large extent. The main culprit is the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT occurs in both men and women and is formed from the male hormone testosterone, through the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme.
This process takes place in the hair root bag of the scalp. 3-alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase is the substance that causes the DHT to be broken down.
When the DHT starts to bind to the androgen receptors, the growth phase of the hair is reduced and eventually the hair root bag will die off. This process can be seen in the figure below. There is no longer any question of hair growth. If this process continues to occur longer, the hairs become smaller and thinner, until thin spots or baldness occurs.

However, there are other causes that can cause hair loss.
It is also possible that hair loss is caused by different types of hair diseases, radiation or chemotherapy.
